On May 21, Elon Musk responded to the media’s proposal for Tesla to acquire Uber in an interview, making it clear that there was “no need” for Tesla to acquire Uber. He believes that in the future, people will no longer have to rely on Uber’s online car-hailing service, but will be able to summon self-driving Tesla cars.
The business model he envisions is that there will be millions of cars with self-driving capabilities by then, including Tesla’s fleet and vehicles owned by car owners. Car owners can choose to add or remove their vehicles from the fleet and make profits by providing autonomous ride-hailing services. Tesla plans to launch its long-delayed self-driving taxi service in Austin next month, Musk confirmed.
In contrast, Uber and Lyft have withdrawn from autonomous driving research and development, instead partnering with autonomous driving companies to provide related services on their platforms. For example, Uber currently offers Waymo’s self-driving ride-hailing services in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta.
